The Role:
A fantastic long-term cover opportunity is available for a dedicated and experienced Pastoral Officer to join the committed student support team at a well-regarded academy located in the Newmarket area.
This essential role is focused on providing frontline pastoral support to students across all year groups, managing a caseload of students with varying needs, and working collaboratively with teachers, parents, and external agencies. You will be instrumental in promoting high standards of behaviour, attendance, and wellbeing, ensuring all students are ready and able to access their education.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide immediate and ongoing pastoral support and guidance to students experiencing social, emotional, or behavioural difficulties.
- Manage individual student caseloads, implementing support plans and monitoring their effectiveness in collaboration with senior staff and external specialists.
- Liaise closely with parents/carers regarding student welfare, attendance, and behaviour concerns, maintaining professional and confidential communication.
- Lead on restorative practices and behaviour interventions, ensuring the school's behaviour policy is applied consistently and fairly.
- Monitor student attendance and punctuality, working with the attendance team to investigate issues and implement strategies to improve student presence.
- Act as a key point of contact for staff regarding pastoral concerns, providing advice and training where necessary.
- Uphold the school's commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all students, following all reporting procedures diligently.
Requirements
- Proven, substantial experience working in a pastoral or student support role within a secondary school or similar setting.
- Excellent understanding of safeguarding procedures and child protection best practices.
- Strong interpersonal, mediation, and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to build rapport quickly with young people.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective liaison with students, staff, parents, and external agencies.
- The ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure, demonstrating resilience and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- High level of organisational skills and the ability to manage a varied and demanding workload.
- Must satisfy all relevant safeguarding and background checks, including an enhanced DBS.
