The Role:
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a proactive and experienced Qualified SEN Teacher to join a specialised, inclusive school in the Cambridge area. This role focuses on teaching students in the Upper Primary and Secondary phases who have a range of complex Special Educational Needs.
You will be responsible for planning, preparing, and teaching a differentiated curriculum (often based on core subjects or life skills) to small groups or 1:1, focusing on needs that may include Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and associated communication or behavioural challenges. This is an essential leadership role that requires strong classroom management, EHCP implementation, and the ability to inspire and manage a team of Teaching Assistants.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality, differentiated teaching sessions tailored to the individual learning needs and styles of students.
- Take full responsibility for the progress and attainment of students within your assigned class or group, utilising evidence-based teaching strategies.
- Develop, implement, and rigorously review Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and Individual Education Plans (IEPs) in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams and parents.
- Effectively manage and motivate a classroom team of SEN Teaching Assistants, providing direction and guidance for the delivery of support.
- Utilise a range of adaptive and supportive communication techniques (e.g., visual supports, communication aids, Makaton) to facilitate student understanding.
- Maintain accurate records of student assessment data, progress, and behavioural incidents, providing detailed feedback to leadership and parents.
- Contribute positively to the wider school community, including participating in staff meetings, training, and curriculum development.
Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is essential, alongside a relevant Bachelor's degree.
- Proven, recent experience teaching students with complex Special Educational Needs (SEN) at either the upper primary (KS2) or secondary (KS3/KS4) level.
- Demonstrable experience in planning and delivering a highly differentiated curriculum to meet the needs of students with SLD, MLD, or ASD.
- Strong classroom management skills, excellent knowledge of positive behaviour support, and a commitment to creating a safe, inclusive learning environment.
- A naturally patient, adaptable, highly resilient, and professional demeanour.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and leadership skills for working effectively with staff, students, and parents.
- A current Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or a willingness to obtain one promptly).
