£150 - £220 per day
Thetford
Are you a master of your craft who can see the finished sculpture hidden within a rough block of wood-and the untapped potential within a student with complex needs?
Can you turn a DT workshop into a space where sensory exploration meets practical life skills, and where every project is a milestone toward a student's independence?
We are searching for a Qualified DT Teacher to lead the technical arts curriculum at a specialist SEN school in Thetford. This role is designed for a practitioner who understands that for students with Autism (ASC), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), or sensory processing challenges, the workshop is a vital place to build fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and confidence. In this setting, your ability to adapt high-risk tools into safe, accessible learning experiences is paramount.
Your Responsibilities
- Bespoke Project Design: Adapt traditional woodwork, textiles, or food technology projects into "small-step" tasks that align with various cognitive levels and physical abilities.
- Workshop Safety Leadership: Maintain a highly structured, low-arousal environment, using visual aids and social stories to teach students the "why" behind safety protocols.
- Sensory-Rich Learning: Integrate tactile experiences into the design process, allowing students to explore textures, weights, and material resistances as a core part of their learning.
- Functional Independence: Focus on "Design for Life"-teaching students how to use tools safely to solve real-world problems and fostering the coordination needed for post-16 transitions.
- EHCP Milestone Ownership: Collaborate with the wider school team to track and record progress toward Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) targets, specifically in areas of motor skills and following multi-step instructions.
- Team Supervision: Direct a team of specialised Teaching Assistants to ensure 1:1 safety oversight during practical sessions and effective support with tool handling.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): This is mandatory. We welcome DT specialists from mainstream backgrounds with a passion for SEN, as well as experienced specialist teachers.
- Technical Adaptability: The ability to simplify complex technical processes into visual, symbol-supported instructions.
- Resilient Calm: The ability to remain a grounded, co-regulating presence in a busy workshop environment where students may become overwhelmed.
- Commitment to Inclusion: A genuine drive to prove that every student, regardless of their diagnosis, can be a creator and a maker.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process one through Randstad).
Why Lead with Randstad?
- Elite Daily Rates: £150 - £220 per day (PAYE), reflecting your dual expertise in DT and specialist education.
- Stability & Consistency: A full-time, long-term role in a supportive Thetford school that values practical subjects as a cornerstone of development.
- Specialist CPD: Access free, certified training in Team Teach, Autism Awareness, and Health & Safety in the SEN Workshop.
- Personalised Support: Work with a dedicated consultant (Neeraj) who specialises in the Norfolk and Suffolk SEN markets.
- Referral Bonus: Earn £300 for every qualified teacher you successfully refer to the Randstad family!
