Cambridge
Are you ready to use the power of storytelling and language to unlock the potential of students who communicate in unique ways?
Do you have the creative flair to turn a piece of literature into a multi-sensory experience and compassion to help a student find their voice, whether through words, signs, or symbols?
We are searching for a passionate Qualified English Teacher to join a specialised SEN school in Cambridge. This is a full-time, long-term role where you will lead the literacy curriculum for students with complex needs, including Autism (ASC), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), and speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN). In this setting, you aren't just teaching a subject; you are providing the tools for self-expression and independence.
Your Responsibilities
- Sensory Literacy Delivery: Adapt classic and contemporary texts into sensory stories, using tactile props and visual aids to make the curriculum accessible to students with profound learning barriers.
- Communication-First Pedagogy: Integrate Colourful Semantics and Widgit Symbols into your lessons to help students build sentence structures and expand their vocabulary.
- Functional Language Skills: Focus on "real-world" English, teaching students how to interpret signs, follow instructions, and express their needs to foster independence beyond the classroom.
- EHCP Milestone Leadership: Take ownership of tracking progress toward Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) literacy targets, celebrating the "small-step" victories that represent significant growth.
- Team Mentorship: Lead a team of Teaching Assistants to deliver high-impact 1:1 reading interventions and speech and language activities.
- Positive Behaviour Support (PBS): Maintain a low-arousal, structured environment using Zones of Regulation to ensure students feel safe and regulated enough to engage with their learning.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): This is mandatory. We welcome English specialists from mainstream backgrounds who have a strong heart for SEN, as well as experienced specialist teachers.
- Inclusive Expertise: Familiarity with communication tools such as Makaton, PECS, or other alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) methods.
- Creative Resilience: The ability to pivot your lesson plan instantly to meet the emotional or sensory needs of your students while maintaining a calm, supportive presence.
- A Collaborative Spirit: A drive to work closely with Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) and parents to ensure a unified approach to each child's communication development.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process one via Randstad).
Why Lead with Randstad Cambridge?
