The Role: Specialist KS4 Teacher - Functional Pathway
We are seeking a proactive and committed QTS SEN Teacher to join a supportive secondary provision in Peterborough, focusing on Key Stage 4 (ages 14-16) pupils. This role involves teaching students with moderate to severe learning difficulties (non-complex PMLD), including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), who are accessing a practical, semi-formal curriculum.
This crucial role is centered on preparing students for their next steps, focusing on functional English, Maths, ICT, and essential life and independence skills. You will be responsible for leading the class, managing the support team, and driving progress toward academic and independence targets outlined in the students' Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver a highly engaging and relevant semi-formal curriculum for KS4, with a strong emphasis on functional skills (e.g., handling money, travel training, effective communication).
- Lead the classroom dynamics, consistently applying Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategies to proactively manage and reduce challenging behaviours, fostering a climate of mutual respect.
- Manage and direct the work of Teaching Assistants, ensuring a coordinated and consistent approach to supporting pupils' learning and sensory needs.
- Monitor, record, and report on student attainment and progress toward EHCP and transition goals, liaising effectively with parents and external agencies.
- Provide clear and consistent structure, enabling pupils to build self-management and independence skills essential for post-16 success.
Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is essential.
- Proven experience teaching students within the Secondary (KS4) phase, with specialist experience in an SEN setting.
- Demonstrable expertise in developing and delivering a semi-formal, functional curriculum.
- A strong, applied knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and effective de-escalation techniques.
- Exceptional classroom leadership and management skills, with the ability to build strong, trusting professional relationships with pupils, parents, and colleagues.
- A calm, resilient, and proactive approach to managing complex and varied learning needs.
- A current Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or a willingness to obtain one promptly).
