An inspiring opportunity has arisen for an SEN Support Worker / Teaching Assistant to join a highly regarded specialist school located just outside Cambridge. In this role, you will provide vital 1:1 and small group support to students with a variety of needs, including Autism (ASC), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team focused on creating a nurturing environment that fosters both academic progress and personal independence.
Key Responsibilities
- Individualised Support: Provide tailored 1:1 assistance to students, helping them engage with sensory-based activities and adapted learning tasks.
- Behaviour Management: Utilise positive reinforcement and de-escalation strategies to help students manage their emotions and stay focused.
- Personal Care: Assist students with personal care, mobility, and feeding requirements in a dignified and respectful manner when necessary.
- Inclusive Environment: Work with the class teacher to adapt resources and the classroom layout to meet the specific sensory and physical needs of the pupils.
- Community & Social Skills: Support students during break times, lunches, and off-site educational visits to help them develop vital social and life skills.
- Progress Tracking: Record daily observations on student engagement and milestones to assist in EHCP reviews and parental updates.
Requirements
- SEN Experience: Previous experience working with children or adults with additional needs (Autism, ADHD, or Complex Needs) is highly preferred.
- Compassionate Nature: A patient, calm, and empathetic approach is essential for this specialist environment.
- Physical Fitness: The ability to stay active throughout the day and assist with physical support or moving and handling (training provided).
- Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to build trust with students and work effectively within a large school team.
- Proactive Attitude: A willingness to learn new specialist techniques, such as Makaton or Team Teach.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or a willingness to obtain one).
