Bury St Edmunds
Are you a Qualified Teacher who loves the "lightbulb moments" of special education but needs a schedule that finally works for you?
Do you have the pedagogical expertise to walk into a new classroom, assess a student's needs in minutes, and deliver a lesson that is both accessible and inspiring?
We are seeking a versatile and highly skilled Ad-hoc SEN Teacher to join our partner SEN Schools in Bury St Edmunds. This is an ideal role for an experienced QTS holder who wants to step away from the relentless cycle of full-time planning and meetings, while still utilising their professional skills to support students with Autism (ASC), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and complex communication needs. You choose the days you work; we provide the environment where you can truly teach.
Your Responsibilities
- Rapid Instructional Adaptation: Deliver pre-planned lessons or create "on-the-fly" activities that meet the immediate sensory and cognitive needs of a diverse SEN classroom.
- Communication Leadership: Facilitate engagement using Makaton, PECS, and visual aids, ensuring that every student has the tools to participate in your lesson.
- Positive Climate Management: Use your professional expertise to maintain a low-arousal, safe, and structured environment, leading the classroom team in de-escalation and co-regulation.
- Team Guidance: Effectively manage a team of Teaching Assistants for the day, ensuring they are deployed to provide the highest impact for 1:1 and small-group interventions.
- Bespoke Learning: Whether it's sensory science, functional literacy, or outdoor learning, you will ensure every student experiences a sense of achievement under your instruction.
- Handover Excellence: Provide clear, concise feedback for the permanent Class Teacher, ensuring continuity of care and learning for every pupil.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): Mandatory. We welcome applications from secondary, primary, or specialist-trained teachers.
- SEN Fluency: A strong understanding of various neurodiverse profiles and the ability to pivot your teaching style to suit ASC, SLD, or MLD learners.
- Resilient Leadership: A calm, authoritative, yet empathetic presence that can stabilise a classroom and inspire confidence in both students and staff.
- Total Adaptability: The professional confidence to work across different age groups and ability levels with minimal notice.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process one urgently through Randstad).
