Cambridge
Are you a specialist educator who views "challenging behaviour" as a form of communication waiting to be understood?
Can you design a classroom environment where the curriculum bows to the needs of the child, rather than the other way around?
We are seeking a Qualified SEN Teacher to lead a vibrant classroom in Cambridge. This role is specifically for a practitioner who excels in "high-care, high-aspiration" settings. You will be teaching a cohort of students with complex needs, including Autism (ASC), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and sensory processing disorders. In this school, your ability to differentiate a lesson five different ways is just as important as your ability to build deep, trusting relationships with your pupils.
Your Strategic Leadership in the Classroom
- Adaptive Curriculum Design: Create and deliver highly bespoke lesson plans that integrate sensory play, functional life skills, and academic targets tailored to diverse cognitive profiles.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Lead a "Team Around the Child" by working closely with Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), and parents to ensure a holistic approach to learning.
- Communication Mastery: Model and implement advanced communication strategies, including Makaton, PECS, and the use of high-tech AAC devices (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).
- EHCP Management: Take full ownership of Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) reviews, setting meaningful, measurable targets and documenting the "small-step" progress that defines specialist education.
- Team Mentorship: Direct and empower a team of Teaching Assistants, ensuring they are effectively deployed to support 1:1 interventions and group regulation.
- Positive Behaviour Support (PBS): Design and maintain a low-arousal, structured environment that utilises Zone of Regulation frameworks to help students manage their emotional states.
Essential Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): This is a mandatory requirement. Applications from ECTs with strong SEN placements are welcome.
- Specialist Pedagogy: Proven experience utilising SEN-specific frameworks like TEACCH, Attention Autism (Bucket Time), or Sensory Stories.
- Resilience & Vision: A calm, stabilising leadership style and a genuine passion for advocating for the rights of children with disabilities.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one via Randstad).
