Bury St Edmunds
Are you a compassionate, resilient individual ready to help students in Bury St Edmunds overcome barriers to learning?
Do you have the empathy to support a child through a sensory meltdown and the passion to celebrate the small, meaningful milestones that others might miss?
We are looking for a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join a high-achieving specialist school in Bury St Edmunds. This is a full-time, long-term role where you will work with students who have a range of additional needs, including Autism (ASC), Moderate to Severe Learning Difficulties (MLD/SLD), and Physical Disabilities. If you are looking for a career that offers profound personal reward and professional growth, this is it.
Your Role: Impact & Responsibilities
In this setting, you are more than an assistant; you are a mentor and a steady presence in a student's life.
- 1:1 Academic Support: Break down classroom tasks into manageable steps, using visual aids and tactile resources to make the curriculum accessible.
- Communication Enablement: Support non-verbal or pre-verbal students using alternative communication methods such as PECS or Makaton to ensure their voice is heard.
- Sensory & Physical Care: Assist with sensory circuits and, where required, provide support with personal care or mobility, ensuring every student is comfortable and ready to learn.
- Behavioral Coaching: Use positive reinforcement and de-escalation strategies to help students manage their emotions and navigate social interactions with peers.
- EHCP Progress Tracking: Work closely with the Class Teacher to observe, record, and report on the specific targets outlined in a student's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
What You'll Bring to the Team
- A "People First" Approach: You see the child before the diagnosis and are committed to championing their independence.
- Resilience: The ability to remain calm and proactive in a fast-paced environment where student needs can change quickly.
- Previous Experience: Experience in SEN, care, youth work, or a similar background is highly valued, though a passionate and coachable attitude is most essential.
- Strong Communication: The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team of teachers, therapists, and parents.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to apply for one).
