Bury St Edmunds
Do you have the quiet strength to remain a "calm anchor" during difficult moments and the genuine passion to champion a child's progress, no matter how small the step?
We are searching for a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join a well regarded SEN School in Bury St Edmunds. This full-time role is perfect for someone who understands that a "standard" approach doesn't work for every learner. You will be supporting students with diverse needs-ranging from Autism (ASC) and Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) to complex communication profiles-ensuring they feel safe, seen, and supported every single day.
Your Daily Impact: Responsibilities
- Academic Adaptation: Work 1:1 to break down lesson objectives into visual, tactile, and sensory-friendly tasks that align with the student's specific learning style.
- Communication Bridging: Facilitate social and academic engagement using PECS, Makaton, or visual schedules to help students find their voice and reduce frustration.
- Regulated Learning Support: Identify early triggers of sensory distress and implement "brain breaks" or sensory circuit activities to help students return to a state of calm.
- EHCP Milestone Advocacy: Collaborate with the Class Teacher to track and record daily progress toward Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) targets, celebrating every milestone achieved.
- Safe Haven Creation: Maintain a structured, predictable environment where students feel secure enough to explore new skills and build social confidence.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Emotional Resilience: You are the "calm in the storm," capable of remaining objective and supportive during periods of high-pressure or challenging behavior.
- A Learner's Mindset: You are eager to adopt specialist techniques and are willing to learn the specific nuances of each student you support.
- Dependability: Students in specialist settings thrive on routine; we need a consistent professional who will be a reliable figure in their school week.
- Relevant Background: Experience in care, psychology, youth work, or previous school support is highly valued, but your empathy and attitude are your most important assets.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to obtain one via Randstad).
