Bury St Edmunds
Do you have the "emotional endurance" to stay grounded during challenging moments and the genuine heart to champion a child's progress, no matter how incremental the step?
We are searching for a dedicated and resilient SEN Teaching Assistant to join a well regarded SEN School community in Bury St Edmunds. This full-time, long-term role is designed for someone who understands that "behaviour is communication" and is committed to providing a secure, inclusive space for every learner. You will be supporting students with diverse needs-ranging from Autism (ASC) and Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) to sensory processing challenges.
Your Responsibilities
- Bespoke Academic Support: Work 1:1 to break down lesson objectives into visual, tactile, and sensory-friendly tasks that align with the student's specific cognitive level.
- Communication Bridging: Assist students using PECS, Makaton, or visual schedules to ensure every child has a way to express their needs and reduce frustration.
- Sensory & Emotional Regulation: Identify early triggers of sensory distress and implement "brain breaks" or sensory circuit activities to help students return to a state of calm.
- EHCP Milestone Tracking: Collaborate with the Class Teacher to observe and record daily progress toward Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) targets.
- Dignity-Focused Care: Provide essential support with mobility, meal times, and personal care, ensuring every student's comfort and respect are the priority.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Emotional Resilience: You are the "calm in the storm," capable of remaining supportive and objective even during periods of high pressure.
- Proactive Intuition: You can anticipate a student's needs before they lead to frustration, acting quickly to keep the environment positive.
- Dependability: Students in specialist settings thrive on routine; we need a consistent professional who will be a reliable figure in their school week.
- Relevant Background: Experience in care, psychology, youth work, or previous school support is highly valued, but your empathy and "can-do" attitude are essential.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to obtain one via Randstad).
