Bury St Edmunds
Looking for a role that fits around your life, while still giving you the chance to be the highlight of a student's day?
Do you have the natural ability to walk into a new environment, read the room, and provide the steady, calming influence a neurodiverse learner needs to flourish?
We are seeking adaptable and enthusiastic Ad-hoc SEN Teaching Assistants to join our partner SEN Schools in Bury St Edmunds. This is the perfect opportunity for someone who needs a truly flexible work-life balance-whether you are a student, a professional with other commitments, or simply looking for variety-without sacrificing the reward of working in special education. You will provide essential daily cover, supporting pupils with Autism (ASC), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and complex sensory needs.
Your Responsibilities
- Rapid Relationship Building: Quickly identifying a student's unique interests and motivators to encourage participation in sensory and academic activities.
- Communication Support: Utilising basic Makaton, PECS, or visual choice boards to ensure non-verbal or pre-verbal students can express their needs effectively.
- Proactive Regulation: Supporting the permanent team in maintaining a calm, low-arousal environment and helping students navigate "brain breaks" and sensory circuits.
- Classroom Versatility: Assisting with a wide range of tasks, from outdoor learning and forest school sessions to functional life skills and creative arts.
- Dignity & Wellbeing: Providing essential assistance with mobility and personal care where required, ensuring every student feels safe, clean, and respected.
- Active Collaboration: Being a proactive "right hand" to the Class Teacher, jumping in to support 1:1 or small group interventions whenever needed.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Exceptional Adaptability: The ability to walk into different settings and adjust your support style to the specific needs of the students on that day.
- Resilient Positivity: A calm, "can-do" attitude that remains steady even during a student's difficult or dysregulated moments.
- Reliability: When you accept a shift, the school and the students are counting on you to be a dependable and helpful part of their day.
- Relevant Background: Experience in SEN, healthcare, care work, or youth coaching is ideal, but a genuine heart for supporting neurodiverse learners is the most important trait.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process one through Randstad).
