We are seeking a proactive and supportive Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant (SEN TA) to join a welcoming and dedicated SEN School located in Cambridge. If you are passionate about enabling daily progress, celebrating small milestones, and helping students develop essential communication and independence skills, this is the role for you.
The Role
A fantastic, full-time opportunity exists for an experienced or aspiring SEN TA to provide crucial support within a well-regarded specialist school provision. This role involves working with pupils across various age ranges (likely Primary or Secondary) who have complex and varying needs, which may include:
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
- Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
- Associated communication and physical needs (e.g., EHCPs).
Your contribution will be vital in creating a structured, nurturing, and secure learning environment. You will be instrumental in helping students access their highly tailored curriculum and achieve the goals outlined in their Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Core Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one or small-group support to pupils, assisting with their educational, behavioural, social, and therapeutic needs as directed by the Class Teacher.
- Assist in the preparation of highly differentiated, multi-sensory resources and manage the learning environment to ensure it is calm, predictable, and engaging.
- Support the implementation of specialised communication methods, such as PECS, Makaton, or other Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems.
- Assist with the physical and personal care needs of pupils (including manual handling, feeding, and personal hygiene) following established protocols and training.
- Help manage challenging behaviours calmly and consistently using approved positive behaviour support strategies.
- Accurately record and report on pupil progress, incidents, and specific needs to the Class Teacher and therapeutic staff.
- Liaise effectively with external professionals (e.g., Speech & Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists) to integrate therapeutic goals into the daily routine.
Essential Profile
- Proven experience working with children or young people with complex SEN (such as ASC, SLD, or PMLD) within a school or care setting is highly desirable.
- A genuine understanding of, or willingness to train in, structured intervention techniques (e.g., visual schedules, sensory diets, positive behaviour support).
- High levels of patience, empathy, resilience, and flexibility, coupled with a calm and consistent approach to routines.
- Confidence in assisting with personal care and physical mobility needs (training will be provided where necessary).
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Possession of an Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one promptly).
