The Opportunity:
A profoundly rewarding opportunity is available for a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to work within a well-regarded, specialist provision near Ely. This role focuses entirely on supporting pupils with complex needs, including PMLD, SLD, Autism with associated challenging behaviour, and significant medical/physical dependencies.
Your primary function will be to provide crucial personal care support, facilitate sensory and communicative engagement, and implement bespoke learning programmes designed around the student's holistic needs. You will be instrumental in ensuring a safe, hygienic, and highly stimulating environment, typically working on a 1:1 basis or in very small, needs-specific groups.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide direct, high-quality personal care support (including feeding, toileting, and manual handling) with dignity and respect, adhering strictly to care plans.
- Facilitate access to the curriculum using specialised equipment, communication aids, and sensory resources (e.g., light rooms, hydrotherapy).
- Work closely with therapists (Physio, Occupational, Speech & Language) to deliver prescribed programmes, including passive movement exercises or communication system practice.
- Implement effective Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategies appropriate for non-verbal or minimally verbal pupils, focusing on identifying communicative intent behind actions.
- Accurately monitor and record observations related to pupil health, communication, engagement, and any medical incidents, maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Assist in the safe use of mobility equipment and adapt the physical learning environment to ensure accessibility.
- Act as a reliable and sensitive communication partner, responding appropriately to subtle cues and expressions of need.
Essential Profile
- Significant professional experience supporting children or young people within a specialist SEN School setting, ideally with PMLD, SLD, or complex medical needs.
- Proven experience and confidence in delivering personal care and hygiene tasks and assisting with mobility/feeding.
- Up-to-date training or proven experience in Manual Handling/Moving and Handling of pupils.
- Familiarity with specialised communication methods, including sensory communication, PECS, or switches.
- Exceptional patience, sensitivity, and resilience, coupled with a calm and methodical approach to managing complex routines.
- Strong ability to collaborate effectively with multi-agency teams (Nurses, Physiotherapists, etc.).
- Possession of an Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one promptly).
