Meldreth
Are you ready to be the person who helps a child find their voice, their confidence, and their place in the world?
Do you possess the emotional depth to stay steady during challenging moments and the genuine joy to celebrate the "small steps" that represent massive hurdles overcome?
We are seeking a dedicated and resilient SEN Teaching Assistant to join a well regarded SEN School based in Meldreth. This position offers the flexibility of a long-term full-time role with the potential to transition into a permanent contract for the right candidate. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team supporting students with diverse and complex needs, including Autism (ASC), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and significant physical or sensory processing sensitivities.
Your Responsibilities
- Tailored Learning Scaffolding: Work 1:1 or in small groups to simplify academic tasks into tactile, sensory-rich activities that match each student's specific developmental stage.
- Communication Facilitation: Model and encourage the use of Makaton, PECS, or Widgit symbols to ensure every student can express their preferences and advocate for themselves.
- Proactive Co-Regulation: Identify the subtle signs of student distress or sensory overload, utilizing Sensory Circuits or low-arousal techniques to help learners regain their focus.
- Targeted Progress Documentation: Assist the Class Teacher in tracking achievements against Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) targets, providing vital feedback on social and emotional growth.
- Dignity-Focused Support: Provide essential assistance with mobility and personal care, ensuring every student feels comfortable and respected within their environment.
What You'll Bring
- Unyielding compassion: You understand that building trust with neurodiverse learners takes time, and you are committed to the long-term journey.
- Reflective Practice: The ability to remain calm under pressure and analyze "behavior as communication" to better support a student's needs.
- Versatility: You can pivot your energy levels instantly-from enthusiastic motivation during play to quiet, grounded observation during focused work.
- Relevant Background: Experience in care, youth work, mental health, or special education is highly desirable, though a passionate "can-do" attitude is the ultimate requirement.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process one through Randstad).
