A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join a partner specialist SEN school near Mildenhall. You'll work closely with incredible students, providing tailored support to help them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children with special needs and a genuine desire to make a positive impact. A resilient, understanding, and proactive approach is essential.
The Role
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will be a vital part of the student's journey. You'll provide targeted support that helps them overcome challenges and reach their full potential.
- Student Support: Provide tailored one-to-one and small group support, helping students access the curriculum and achieve the goals outlined in their Individual Education Plans (IEPs). Your support will be key to their academic progress.
- Classroom Assistance: Work closely with the class teacher to prepare resources, set up learning activities, and maintain a safe, stimulating, and organized classroom environment. Your contributions will help the classroom run smoothly and effectively.
- Encouraging Independence: Use strategies that foster self-confidence and independence, empowering students to take on new challenges and celebrate their personal growth. You'll be a cheerleader for their progress.
- Promoting Well-being: Act as a key pastoral support figure, helping to manage classroom behavior, promote positive social interactions, and ensure the physical and emotional well-being of our students throughout the school day.
- Collaboration: Actively communicate with the class teacher and other staff to share observations on student progress, challenges, and successes. Your insights will be crucial for adapting support strategies and planning future lessons.
- Personal Care: Assist with personal care needs as required, always ensuring student dignity and privacy are respected.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you should have:
- Experience: Proven experience working with children, particularly those with special educational needs, is highly desirable. This could be in a school, care, or voluntary setting.
- Safeguarding: A strong understanding of safeguarding procedures and a commitment to protecting the welfare of all children is a non-negotiable requirement. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.
- Core Skills: You should have a good standard of literacy and numeracy, typically demonstrated by GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above, or equivalent qualifications.
- Specialist Knowledge (Desirable): While not essential, any experience or training in areas such as Makaton, PECS, or positive behavior management strategies would be a significant advantage. A basic understanding of different SEN conditions (e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Dyslexia) is also beneficial.
