The Opportunity
A fantastic, rewarding opening exists for a dedicated SEN Learning Support Assistant to work within a well-regarded school provision near Newmarket. This role primarily focuses on supporting pupils who require intensive structure and emotional guidance to manage their behaviour and access the curriculum.
Your expertise will be vital in helping students develop self-regulation strategies, improve their concentration, and successfully integrate into classroom activities. You will typically support pupils on a 1:1 or small group basis who may present with challenging behaviours (SEMH) or difficulties related to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Mild Learning Difficulties (MLD).
Core Responsibilities
- Provide direct, focused support to named pupils, ensuring their individual learning and behaviour targets are met consistently throughout the school day.
- Implement effective Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategies and school protocols to minimise disruption and help pupils manage their frustrations constructively.
- Work closely with the class teacher to adapt lesson materials and provide scaffolding, ensuring complex information is broken down into manageable steps.
- Act as a stable, reliable mentor figure, helping pupils navigate social interactions and transitional periods within the school day.
- Record detailed observations on pupil engagement, incidents, and breakthroughs, contributing essential data for professional reviews and future planning.
- Participate actively in relevant training sessions and team meetings, bringing a solutions-focused approach to support discussions.
- Foster a trusting, empathetic relationship with students to encourage their positive participation and academic effort.
Essential Profile
- Previous professional experience supporting children or young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs or complex behaviours.
- Proven ability to remain calm and authoritative in challenging situations, applying clear and consistent boundaries.
- Familiarity with structured intervention strategies and a genuine understanding of the underlying causes of challenging behaviour.
- High levels of personal resilience, energy, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
- Possession of an Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one promptly).
