About the Opportunity:
We are looking for an experienced, highly empathetic, and committed SEN Teaching Assistant to join the dedicated staff at a well-regarded specialist school in the Newmarket vicinity. This position starts on a temporary contract basis, with excellent prospects for it to become a long-term or permanent placement.
This role is fundamental to ensuring the successful delivery of highly individualized education. Working closely with the Class Teacher and specialist clinical team, you will be responsible for practical classroom support-from resource preparation to general management. Crucially, your primary function will be to provide direct, tailored intervention to students during all aspects of the school day. You will be instrumental in executing the strategies laid out in individual Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), focusing on developing communication skills, promoting independence, and assisting with essential personal and sensory care.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide high-impact, targeted assistance to students (individually or in small groups), helping them access the specialist curriculum and achieve their EHCP objectives.
- Support the Class Teacher by preparing learning resources, maintaining an organized and engaging learning space, and managing general classroom dynamics.
- Deliver required personal care (e.g., support with feeding, hygiene, and mobility) while consistently maintaining the student's dignity.
- Implement specified positive behaviour management techniques and utilise alternative communication methods (such as Makaton or PECS) as directed by clinical and teaching staff.
- Record and accurately report student progress, behaviour incidents, and any concerns to the relevant staff members.
- Contribute positively to the school community and rigorously adhere to all school protocols, especially safeguarding procedures.
Candidate Requirements
- Substantial and demonstrable experience working successfully as a Teaching Assistant, ideally within an SEN or dedicated specialist setting.
- A relevant qualification (e.g., Level 2 or 3 TA qualification) is desirable, but strong, relevant professional experience will be fully considered.
- Proven ability to effectively support students with a wide spectrum of complex Special Educational Needs (e.g., PMLD, ASC, Complex Needs).
- Exceptional qualities including resilience, adaptability, patience, and a genuine, unwavering commitment to supporting students facing learning barriers.
- Knowledge of various communication aids and effective positive behaviour support systems.
- Must hold a current Enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service or be willing to process one immediately.
