Peterborough
Are you a resilient and high-energy professional ready to support students in one of Peterborough's most dynamic specialist settings?
We are seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join our partner SEN School in Peterborough. This school is a specialist hub for pupils with a wide spectrum of needs, including Autism (ASC), Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges, and Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD). In this role, you will be more than a classroom aide; you will be a mentor, a co-regulator, and a steady influence for young people who need a tailored approach to reach their full potential.
Your Daily Impact: Responsibilities
- Dynamic 1:1 Intervention: Work closely with students who require high levels of engagement, using personalised interests to bridge the gap between them and the curriculum.
- De-escalation & Regulation: Utilise Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and de-escalation techniques to help students manage their emotions and remain in a "ready to learn" state.
- Communication Support: Implement visual schedules, now-and-next boards, and basic Makaton to provide structure and clarity for students with processing delays.
- Academic Scaffolding: Assist the Class Teacher in breaking down complex tasks into manageable "small steps," celebrating every success along the way.
- Vocational & Life Skills: Support students during practical sessions and community visits, helping them develop the independence they need for life beyond the classroom.
- EHCP Contribution: Maintain clear, objective records of student progress and behavioural triggers to assist in Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) reviews.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Resilient Emotional Intelligence: The ability to stay calm and grounded when faced with challenging behaviour or high-stress situations.
- Proactive Engagement: You don't wait for instructions; you see where a student is struggling and step in with a smile and a solution.
- Reliability & Commitment: Consistency is vital for our Peterborough students; we need someone who can commit to a full-time, long-term schedule.
- Relevant Background: Experience in SEN, youth work, sports coaching, or the care sector is highly beneficial, but a "can-do" attitude and a genuine passion for inclusion are essential.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one urgently through Randstad).
