The Opportunity
A highly valuable and locally focused opportunity exists for an experienced SEN Learning Support Assistant to join a well-regarded school near Burwell. This role is focused on providing essential support to pupils across various age groups who require structure and encouragement due to Mild Learning Difficulties (MLD), emerging SEMH needs, and challenges related to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Your role will be pivotal in helping students develop better organisational skills, manage their emotional responses, and access a differentiated curriculum. You will typically support pupils in a small group format or provide focused 1:1 assistance within the classroom, ensuring they remain on task and participate positively.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide tailored academic and emotional support to pupils, ensuring consistent effort and progress towards their short and long-term targets.
- Implement the school's established positive behaviour management strategies and interventions to support pupils in regulating their conduct and emotions.
- Assist the class teacher in modifying and preparing lesson materials, using visual aids and scaffolding techniques to make content accessible for pupils with MLD.
- Deliver targeted, pre-planned intervention sessions in core subjects (Literacy and Numeracy) to reinforce key concepts and bridge learning gaps.
- Serve as a positive and reliable mentor, encouraging pupils to participate fully and helping them navigate the social aspects of school life.
- Maintain accurate, professional records of pupil engagement and behavioural responses to inform teacher assessments and SEN reviews.
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff, parents, and the SENCo to ensure a coordinated and effective approach to pupil support.
Essential Profile
- Previous professional experience supporting children or young people with Mild Learning Difficulties (MLD) or Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
- Proven ability to establish positive, professional relationships quickly and effectively manage minor classroom behavioural incidents.
- Practical knowledge of strategies that support pupils with ADHD (e.g., movement breaks, visual timers, clear structure).
- High levels of patience, adaptability, and a proactive approach to supporting pupil independence.
- Strong organisational skills and an excellent track record of professionalism and adherence to school policies.
- Possession of an Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one promptly).
