The Opportunity
A truly rewarding opportunity is available for a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist educational setting near Fordham. This role is focused on providing bespoke, intensive support to pupils who require highly individualised education, communication, and care programmes.
Your primary function will involve facilitating both educational engagement and essential personal care, ensuring the student's holistic needs are met with dignity and expertise. You will be instrumental in implementing therapeutic and sensory programmes, often supporting students on a 1:1 basis or within a small classroom designed specifically for complex learners.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality personal care (including feeding, manual handling, and hygiene support) with sensitivity and strict adherence to care plans.
- Facilitate educational access by implementing communication aids (PECS, Makaton, switches) and utilising specialised sensory and therapeutic equipment (e.g., in hydrotherapy or soft play).
- Work collaboratively with multi-agency professionals (Physiotherapists, SaLT, Occupational Therapists) to deliver prescribed therapeutic programmes within the school day.
- Implement effective, low-arousal Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategies, focusing on recognising and responding to the communicative intent behind challenging behaviours.
- Maintain meticulous, sensitive records regarding pupil health, communication progress, engagement levels, and critical incidents.
- Ensure a safe, highly stimulating, and adaptable learning environment, assisting with mobility equipment and classroom preparation.
- Act as a reliable and patient communication partner, fostering a deep understanding of the pupil's unique ways of expressing their needs and preferences.
Essential Profile
- Significant professional experience supporting children or young people within a specialist SEN School environment, ideally encompassing SLD, PMLD, or complex ASC.
- Proven competency and confidence in delivering personal care, hygiene support, and assisting with complex feeding or mobility needs.
- Up-to-date knowledge or certified training in Manual Handling/Moving and Handling of pupils is highly desirable.
- Practical understanding of communication methods appropriate for pupils with limited verbal language (AAC).
- Exceptional levels of patience, resilience, and compassion, coupled with an unwavering commitment to dignity and safeguarding.
- Strong ability to work seamlessly and reflectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Possession of an Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one promptly).
