The Opportunity
A significant opening is available for a focused SEN Intervention Assistant to work within a supportive mainstream or specialist setting in the Wisbech area. This role is specifically designed to support pupils who require intensive behavioural and emotional guidance to manage their challenges and remain engaged in education.
This challenging but high-impact position involves providing critical 1:1 and small-group support to students with identified SEMH needs, Attachment Difficulties, or diagnosed conditions like ADHD, who require skilled intervention to navigate the school day successfully. You will be instrumental in teaching coping mechanisms and promoting responsible decision-making.
Core Responsibilities
- Implement complex individualised Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plans and risk management strategies with fidelity and consistency.
- Utilize effective de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention skills to manage moments of emotional distress or challenging behaviour, ensuring the safety of the student and others.
- Facilitate small-group therapeutic activities focused on developing social skills, emotional literacy, and conflict resolution.
- Act as a stable, non-judgmental adult, mentoring pupils to help them process their feelings and understand the impact of their behaviour.
- Collaborate closely with the SENCO, pastoral leads, and external agencies to contribute valuable insights to ongoing student support reviews.
- Provide targeted academic support, modifying tasks as needed to reduce frustration and promote access to the curriculum.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of behavioural incidents, triggers, and the effectiveness of implemented strategies.
Essential Profile
- Extensive and recent experience supporting young people with significant SEMH needs and challenging behaviour, ideally within a school or alternative provision setting.
- Proven knowledge and practical application of various behaviour management methodologies and de-escalation techniques.
- Exceptional levels of personal resilience, calmness under pressure, and the ability to maintain professional detachment.
- Strong ability to build positive rapport with students who may be resistant to adult support.
- Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate challenging information sensitively to staff and professionals.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
- Possession of an Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one promptly).
