The Role:
A crucial and exciting opportunity is available for a proactive and experienced Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to join the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) at an established specialist SEN school serving the Thetford area.
This position holds primary responsibility for the strategic development of SEN policy and provision across the school. You will lead the identification, assessment, and intervention processes for pupils with a wide range of complex needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), and associated complex needs. You will be key to ensuring the school meets its statutory duties and provides exceptional, child-centred care and education.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Oversee the day-to-day operation of the school's SEN policy, acting as the main point of contact for all SEN-related matters, and reporting directly to the Headteacher and Governors.
- Assessment and Intervention: Coordinate and conduct specialist assessments, interpret outcomes, and ensure appropriate, evidence-based interventions are planned, implemented, and regularly reviewed across the school.
- Statutory Compliance: Manage all aspects of the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) process, including co-ordinating Annual Reviews, writing comprehensive reports, and ensuring timely communication with the Local Authority.
- Staff Development: Lead, mentor, and provide high-quality training and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for all teaching and support staff on specific SEN strategies, inclusive practice, and the use of specialist resources.
- Partnership and Liaison: Foster strong relationships and liaise effectively with parents/carers, external agencies (e.g., therapists, social care, medical services), and feeder schools to ensure cohesive and holistic support for every child.
- Resource Management: Deploy the school's SEN budget and specialist resources effectively, ensuring all provision is efficient and maximizes impact on student outcomes.
Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is absolutely essential.
- The National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCO) is essential, or a commitment to achieving it within the stipulated time frame.
- Significant, recent experience working as a SENCO or in a senior SEN leadership role, ideally within a specialist SEN setting.
- Expert knowledge of the latest SEN Code of Practice (2015), relevant legislation, and best practices in specialist education.
- Outstanding leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire confidence and manage challenging conversations professionally.
- A naturally strategic, organised, and highly resilient nature, coupled with an unwavering commitment to advocating for vulnerable learners.
- A current Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or a willingness to obtain one promptly).
