As an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) working within Durham County Council, you will play a vital role in the assessment, coordination, and delivery of mental health services to vulnerable adults experiencing mental health crises. You will have the statutory responsibility to undertake Mental Health Act assessments and make decisions about compulsory admissions in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring the legal and ethical rights of service users are upheld.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive Mental Health Act assessments in response to referrals, often in crisis situations.
Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, and other health professionals to develop effective care plans.
Make decisions regarding the use of the Mental Health Act in line with legal frameworks and professional guidelines.
Liaise with service users, their families, carers, and other agencies to ensure a holistic and person-centred approach to care.
Maintain accurate records and documentation related to assessments, decisions, and care plans.
Provide expert advice and support to colleagues, professionals, and partner agencies on mental health legislation and practice.
Participate in training, supervision, and continuous professional development to maintain AMHP registration and competencies.
Contribute to the development and review of policies, procedures, and protocols related to mental health services within the council.
Person Specification:
Approved Mental Health Professional qualification with registration.
Experience in mental health assessments, including statutory Mental Health Act assessments.
Strong understanding of mental health legislation, particularly the Mental Health Act.
Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively under pressure and make sound decisions in crisis situations.
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable adults.
Knowledge of community mental health services and social care systems.
Ability to work flexibly and independently, including out-of-hours duties if required.
