Cared for team
Social worker - Permanent
£32,000 - £42,000
The Cared for Children teams works with children and young people currently in our care. Supporting children and their families who have a plan to live outside of the family care.
Duties :
- When a child is at risk, the council conducts assessments to understand their needs and develop a care plan outlining where the child will live and who will care for them. This might involve Section 17 assessments for children in need, or more formal processes like Public Law Outline (PLO) and court proceedings if a child is at significant risk of harm.
- Ensuring children in care are placed in properly approved placements, such as foster care (preferably with kin/family networks if possible) or residential care, that meet their individual needs. Efforts are made to keep siblings together where appropriate.
- Regular visits by social workers to placements to monitor the child's care, physical and emotional well-being, and living arrangements. Children Looked After (CLA) reviews and Care Team Meetings (CTMs) are held regularly with parents, carers, and professionals to assess the child's progress and needs. Independent Reviewing Officers (IROs) oversee CLA reviews to ensure the child's best interests are paramount.
- Arranging regular medical checks with paediatricians and other health professionals to ensure children are healthy and receive necessary support (e.g., dental, mental health via CAMHS).
- Supporting children to build resilience, develop self-image and confidence, experience positive affirmation, and engage in cultural, physical, play, and recreational activities.
- Middlesbrough Council emphasises a multi-agency approach, working with schools, health services, police, and other partners to provide holistic support for children and families.
- The Council takes its role as a "corporate parent" seriously, meaning all departments and services within the council have a responsibility to support looked-after children.
- Ensuring the child's needs and wishes are put first. This includes direct work with children to understand their voice and lived experiences, and supporting them to express themselves and communicate their needs.
