Job Purpose:
To safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people by identifying risk, undertaking thorough assessments, and providing timely and appropriate interventions. The Child Protection Social Worker will work in accordance with statutory duties, local authority procedures, and government guidance to ensure that children are protected from harm and their well-being is improved.
Key Responsibilities:
Undertake complex assessments of children and families under the Framework for the Assessment of Children in Need and their Families.
Develop and implement Child Protection Plans, Child in Need Plans, and Looked After Children (LAC) Care Plans.
Respond promptly to referrals and concerns about children at risk of significant harm, including Section 47 enquiries and joint investigations with the police.
Attend and contribute to case conferences, court hearings, strategy meetings, reviews, and planning meetings.
Work in partnership with families, children, and other professionals to deliver effective and coordinated support.
Maintain up-to-date, accurate, and comprehensive case records in line with statutory requirements and organisational policies.
Prepare reports and present evidence in court proceedings, including Public Law Outline (PLO) and Care Proceedings.
Participate in regular supervision, reflective practice, and continued professional development.
Work flexibly to manage caseloads effectively and meet service delivery standards.
Essential Qualifications and Experience:
Social Work qualification (BA/BSc Social Work, Diploma in Social Work, or equivalent).
Registration with Social Work England.
Minimum 1-2 years post-qualification experience in a statutory children's social work team (e.g., Child Protection, Assessment, or LAC).
Proven ability to manage a complex and varied caseload with a child-centered approach.
Knowledge and Skills:
In-depth knowledge of legislation, statutory guidance, and frameworks relating to children's social care (e.g., Children Act 1989 & 2004, Working Together to Safeguard Children).
Strong assessment, analytical, and report-writing skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Competence in managing risk, decision-making, and multi-agency collaboration.
Emotional resilience and the ability to cope with difficult situations and high-pressure environments.
Ability to use IT systems effectively for case recording and reporting.
Desirable:
Best Interest Assessor or AMHP training (or willingness to undertake).
