Rate: Competitive Day Rate (Negotiable based on experience)
About the Role:
We are currently seeking a skilled and experienced Carpenter to undertake crucial fire door remedial works across several student accommodation blocks in Southampton. This is a self-employed position running from an immediate start until the end of October 2025.
The successful candidate will be responsible for upgrading and repairing existing fire door sets to ensure they are fully compliant with current UK fire safety regulations. You will be working independently in a live environment, requiring a professional, tidy, and efficient approach to your work.
Key Responsibilities:
Carrying out inspections and remedial works on existing timber fire doors.
Adjusting and rehanging doors to ensure correct gaps and operation.
Replacing and installing essential fire door hardware, including hinges, closers, latches, and locks.
Fitting intumescent strips, smoke seals, and acoustic seals.
Making minor repairs to door frames and linings.
Ensuring all work is completed to a high standard and in line with fire safety standards (e.g., BS 8214).
Maintaining a clean and safe working environment.
Liaising with the on-site supervisor to report progress.
Essential Requirements for the Candidate:
Proven experience as a Carpenter, with specific and demonstrable experience in fire door installation and/or remediation.
NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Carpentry & Joinery (or equivalent time-served experience).
In-depth knowledge of current fire door regulations and standards.
A valid CSCS card (Blue Skilled Worker card preferred).
Must have your own full set of professional tools, including routers, jigs, and all necessary hand/power tools for fire door work.
Own transport is essential to travel between sites in the Southampton area.
Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality workmanship.
Ability to work independently and manage your own time effectively.
