Ipswich
Can you turn a History lesson into a time-traveling adventure or make Geography a hands-on exploration of the world?
We are seeking a creative and adaptable Qualified Humanities Teacher (QTS) to lead Key Stage 3 History, Geography, and RE at our partner SEN School in Ipswich. This role is designed for an educator who understands that for students with Autism (ASC), ADHD, and Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), the past and the wider world need to be made tangible. You will be the lead guide for Years 7, 8, and 9, fostering a sense of identity and global citizenship in a classroom that prioritises empathy, visual learning, and "small-step" success.
Your Responsibilities
- Adaptive Humanities Pedagogy: Take core KS3 History and Geography topics and translate them into highly visual, sensory-rich projects that align with EHCP outcomes.
- Immersive Learning: Use artifacts, sensory stories, and virtual "field trips" to bring abstract historical events or geographical features to life for neurodiverse learners.
- Social & Emotional Growth: Utilise RE and Ethics topics to facilitate safe discussions around diversity, kindness, and personal beliefs, fostering a respectful and inclusive classroom culture.
- Total Communication: Expertly use Makaton, visual timelines, and simplified mapping tools to ensure that complex concepts like "chronology" or "climate" are accessible to every learner.
- Literacy Scaffolding: Work closely with the English department to embed functional literacy into Humanities, supporting students with dyslexia or processing delays in expressing their ideas.
- TA Team Leadership: Lead a team of specialised TAs, ensuring they are empowered to support 1:1 and small-group inquiries during project-based learning.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): Mandatory. A degree in History, Geography, Religious Studies, or a related Humanities field is highly desirable.
- SEN Expertise: Proven experience (or a passionate commitment to learning) how to differentiate secondary-level Humanities for students with complex learning profiles.
- Creative Resourcefulness: The ability to move away from textbooks and use drama, art, and technology to tell the stories of our world.
- Resilient Empathy: A calm and steady presence, with the ability to maintain high expectations while supporting students through periods of emotional dysregulation.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one urgently via Randstad).
