An impactful opportunity has arisen for a Learning Support Mentor specialising in Health and Personal Care to join a leading Further Education provider in Cambridge. This role is central to the "Supported Learning" directorate, where you will work with students aged 16+ who have a range of needs, including physical disabilities, ASD, and sensory impairments. Your mission is to provide the vital personal and medical support they need to feel safe, while coaching them toward the independence required to succeed in their college journey.
Key Responsibilities
- Personal Care & Well-being: Provide essential support for students with health or personal care needs, ensuring their dignity and comfort so they can focus on their learning.
- Academic Empowerment: Assist in a variety of learning environments by taking notes, reading materials, defining complex language, and utilising enabling technologies.
- Resource Adaptation: Modify classroom materials on the fly-such as enlarging text or simplifying language-to ensure every student can access the curriculum.
- Therapy Implementation: Support the delivery of professional therapy interventions, including Physiotherapy and Speech & Language programmes, following expert guidance.
- Community Integration: Provide supervision and support outside the classroom during breaks, lunchtimes, and on college trips to ensure a safe and inclusive social experience.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate daily logs (Pro-monitor) to track student attendance, target-setting, and progress toward their EHCP outcomes.
Requirements
- Experience in Care or SEN: Proven experience supporting individuals with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, or complex health needs.
- Personal Care Proficiency: Comfort and experience in providing personal care and physical support in a professional and respectful manner.
- Educational Aptitude: Strong literacy and numeracy skills to assist students with word processing, note-taking, and metacognitive skills.
- Collaborative Spirit: The ability to work seamlessly with lecturers, assessors, and therapists to provide a holistic support package.
- Safeguarding Commitment: A high level of awareness regarding student welfare and the ability to follow college safeguarding procedures.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child & Adult DBS check (or willingness to undergo one).
