The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly motivated and resilient Learning Mentor (Grade 4) to provide intensive educational and pastoral support within a dedicated Secondary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU). This crucial role involves enabling pupil access to learning, assisting with complex behaviour management, and delivering specialised interventions under the guidance of teaching staff.
About the School (Secondary PRU)
We are supporting an established Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) serving vulnerable Key Stage 3 students who have been excluded from mainstream education or who present with significant Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) and behavioural difficulties. Our mission is to provide consistent support, tailored education, and positive intervention strategies to ensure students achieve positive outcomes and are successfully prepared for their next educational placement.
Key Duties & Responsibilities (Support for Pupils & Teachers):
Direct Pupil Support: Work with groups and individual pupils to overcome barriers to learning, including implementing Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and delivering therapy/programmes of work.
Pastoral & Welfare Care: Attend to children's personal needs, including pastoral, social, health, minor first aid, and welfare matters. Act as a role model and promote the inclusion of all pupils.
Behaviour Management: Assist in the development and consistent implementation of tailored behaviour management strategies. Occasionally supervise whole classes or discreet groups for short periods.
Compliance & Reporting: Undertake comprehensive pupil record keeping, data updating, and accurately recording achievement/progress to provide regular feedback to teaching staff. Comply with all safeguarding and child protection procedures.
Curriculum Assistance: Provide support in all curriculum areas, assisting in the whole planning cycle, preparing resources, and supporting the use of ICT in learning activities.
Person Specification (Minimum Requirements & Core Competencies)
Minimum Requirements:
UK School Experience: A minimum of six months recent experience working within a UK school environment.
SEMH/SEND Experience: Experience of working with children/young people with social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties (SEMH), or those with complex learning difficulties.
Core Skills: Numeracy/literacy skills (at a level equivalent to NQF Level 2).
Induction: Completion of the Teaching Assistant Induction Programme.
Compliance: Willingness to consent to and apply for an enhanced disclosure to a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Services) check.
Core Competencies:
Teamwork & Relationships: Ability to relate well to children and adults and work effectively as part of a team.
Professional Knowledge: An understanding of the role of the Teaching Assistant and other professionals working in the classroom, the national/foundation stage curriculum, and basic child development and learning.
Practical Skills: Ability to use relevant technology (e.g., photocopier) and willingness to undertake first aid training as appropriate.
Personal Style and Behaviour:
Interpersonal Skills: Tact and diplomacy in all interpersonal relationships with the public, pupils, and colleagues.
Drive & Adaptability: Self-motivation and personal drive to complete tasks to the required timescales. The flexibility to adapt to changing workload demands and new school challenges.
Commitment: Personal commitment to ensure support is equally accessible and appropriate to the diverse needs of the pupils.
