The Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Approved Mental Health Practitioner (AMHP) to join our dynamic Adult Social Care team. This is a crucial role within our evolving mental health services, contributing to a robust duty rota and providing specialist support to colleagues across the service.
As a Permanent AMHP, you will hold a statutory responsibility to consider and coordinate all requests for Mental Health Act (MHA) assessments, ensuring a social perspective is brought to the process and prioritising the least restrictive options wherever possible. You will play a pivotal role in upholding the law, protecting the rights of individuals, and promoting recovery-focused practice.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake comprehensive assessments under the Mental Health Act 1983, including those for Community Treatment Orders (CTOs).
- Lead and coordinate the MHA assessment process, making decisions regarding applications for compulsory admission and ensuring adherence to legal frameworks (MHA, MCA, Human Rights Act).
- Conduct Care Act Assessments, supporting individuals to maintain independence and promoting good mental health.
- Provide expert mental health advice, support, and consultation to colleagues and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Work collaboratively with service users, their carers, and other professionals to develop and implement individualised care plans.
- Manage referrals in complex situations, including adult safeguarding cases, assessing risks and developing safety plans.
- Maintain accurate and timely records using relevant electronic systems.
- Participate in the AMHP duty rota, responding to urgent requests for MHA assessments.
- Act as a role model, providing mentorship and support to colleagues, new social workers, and students.
- Contribute to service development and quality assurance initiatives.
- Maintain Approved Mental Health Professional status through ongoing training, supervision, and professional development.
About You:
- Hold professional qualification and full registration & Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) qualification.
- Significant post-qualifying experience of undertaking assessments under the Mental Health Act 1983.
- Demonstrable experience of working with people with severe and enduring mental ill-health.
- Extensive knowledge and experience of implementing the Care Act and Mental Capacity Act.
- The ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, demonstrating excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with service users, carers, and colleagues
- Strong risk management skills and the ability to work independently in challenging situations.
- A commitment to promoting safeguarding and the welfare of vulnerable adults.
- Proficiency in using information technology and electronic record-keeping systems.
- Ability to travel to undertake MHA assessments in community and institutional settings.
