- Assist the Class Teacher and therapists (Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists) in implementing sensory-based activities (e.g., Tacpac, messy play, hydrotherapy) and therapeutic handling techniques.
- Facilitate effective communication using a Total Communication approach, including objects of reference, signing (e.g., Makaton), switches, and body language interpretation.
- Maintain accurate records regarding the student's health, well-being, progress in targets, and any specific incidents, ensuring clear handovers.
- Safely assist with the moving and handling of students, utilising specialist equipment (e.g., wheelchairs, standing frames, hoists) correctly after appropriate training.
- Help create and maintain a sensory-appropriate and stimulating learning environment that promotes well-being and engagement.
- Work closely with parents, external agencies, and the multi-disciplinary team to ensure a consistent, integrated approach to student care and education.
Requirements
- Essential experience supporting pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) or complex physical/medical needs.
- Proven experience or strong willingness to undertake training in personal care and manual handling (e.g., use of hoists).
- Experience with alternative communication methods (e.g., Makaton, PECS, use of switches/communication aids) is highly desirable.
- A naturally patient, extremely gentle, reliable, and highly observant demeanour, with a profound commitment to the dignity and safety of all pupils.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to take direction and work effectively with clinical and therapeutic professionals.
- A current Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or a willingness to obtain one promptly).
