An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated professional to take on a key leadership role at a specialised school for children and young adults with additional needs and SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health).
The Role: SENDCo
This position reports directly to the Head of School and is located across two sites in the Chaldon and Caterham area.
The main purpose of the role is twofold:
To work with the Head of School in all aspects of leadership and management, including developing and managing learning, teaching, curriculum, assessment, careers, and enrichment
To develop the school's SEN provision and oversee its day-to-day operation with the aim of raising SEN pupil achievement.
Key Responsibilities
As the SENDCo, you will play a central role in the school's operation and development. Your responsibilities will include:
Leading SEN Provision: Overseeing the day-to-day operation of the special education policy and advising on its strategic development. You will ensure that the school meets its statutory responsibilities for each pupil's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and defined SEND assessment.
Leadership and Management: Working closely with the Head of School on effective day-to-day management, including recruitment, policy implementation, managing CPD for classroom-based staff, and supporting the school's budget. You will also line manage and supervise designated individuals, including teachers and TAs.
Pupil Progress and Transition: Coordinating and deploying the school's SEN provision, communicating pupil progress to stakeholders, and preparing for annual statutory reviews. You will lead the successful identification and implementation of transition plans for meaningful Post-16 destinations, including leading Year 9 transition reviews.
Curriculum and Teaching: Being responsible for raising standards in teaching and learning, ensuring the curriculum is diverse, flexible, and meets statutory requirements. You will model excellent classroom practice and provide leadership in developing high-quality, stimulating learning environments
Statutory Duties: Carrying out safeguarding duties, acting as Deputy Exam Officer for the site, and identifying/enabling access arrangements for exams.
What We Are Looking For (Essential Criteria)
We are seeking a highly resilient professional with a proven track record:
Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
Experience:
Proven track record of excellent, creative, and structured teaching within relevant key stages and/or a special needs environment.
Experience of holding responsibility for, and turning, policy into effective and successful practice.
Leadership of a significant area, phase, or inclusion, including responsibility for raising standards across the whole school.
Successful management of complex scenarios and conflict resolution, and effective working relationships with a range of external agencies.
Knowledge and Skills:
A clear understanding of the essential qualities for effective teaching and learning, and experience of using effective behaviour and teaching strategies.
Up-to-date knowledge of statutory regulations and guidance on education, attainment, and assessment.
Physical Requirement: The role requires significant resilience and a degree of physical fitness commensurate with being involved in the full range of school activities, including the ability on occasions to be involved in physical restraint.
