Teaching Assistant
£14.24 - £15.35 per hour
St Albans
Are you a practical, caring professional with proven classroom or care sector experience ready to be the guiding hand a child needs to thrive in school?
Can you break down lesson tasks into simple steps, keep energetic learners on track, and offer a steady, calming presence when challenges arise?
Would you like to join a settled primary school team in St Albans on a dependable, full-time contract that offers continuous long-term stability?
Randstad Education has teamed up with a dedicated Primary School in St Albans to appoint a hands-on Teaching Assistant on an ongoing, full-time basis. We are specifically looking for candidates with a solid foundation in school-based support or professional caregiving (such as support work, early years care, or residential youth support). In this role, you will be an indispensable partner to the class teacher-working directly with pupils across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 to make learning accessible, build emotional resilience, and ensure every child feels capable and valued.
How You Will Make an Impact
- Targeted Guided Work: Take small groups for focused practice in reading fluency, phonics sounds, and everyday practical maths tasks.
- Individual Support: Draw on your care or education background to assist pupils with additional needs (including ADHD, autism, and physical or sensory processing differences), adapting tasks so they can participate fully.
- Emotional & Behavioural Regulation: Spot signs of frustration early and use calm de-escalation strategies, praise, and structured routines to help children stay settled and confident.
- Practical Classroom Prep: Help get materials, worksheets, and visual timetables ready before lessons begin, ensuring the room stays tidy, organised, and accessible.
- Observing & Communicating: Notice what helps each pupil learn best, flag any sticking points, and share regular, helpful updates with the teacher and SENCO.
- Playground & Transition Guidance: Encourage positive play, conflict resolution, and safe turn-taking during break times and corridor movements.
What You Bring
- Required Experience: Prior hands-on experience as a Primary Teaching Assistant OR a background in professional care, youth work, or special needs support is strictly essential.
- Core Competencies: Good basic maths and English skills, patient communication, and an instinctive understanding of how to support young people.
- Personal Demeanour: A warm, resilient, and dependable character who stays composed, approachable, and encouraging under pressure.
- Safeguarding & Team Spirit: A genuine commitment to child protection standards, working collaboratively with teachers, and following school policies.
- Vetting Requirements: An Enhanced Child Workforce DBS on the Update Service (or readiness to complete one promptly via Randstad).
