Near St John's Wood
Are you a confident, calm, and resilient individual capable of de-escalating challenging situations with empathy and professionalism?
Can you act as a steady mentor for students who struggle to engage with the traditional classroom environment?
Are you looking for a role in the prestigious St John's Wood area that rewards your ability to build life-changing relationships with vulnerable young people?
We are seeking a dedicated Behavioural Support Assistant for a full-time, long-term position at a high-achieving Secondary School in St John's Wood. This role is specifically designed for someone who can bridge the gap between a student's emotional struggles and their academic potential. You will work with students-often those with SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs or ADHD-who require a firm yet supportive hand to help them navigate the school day and stay on the path to success.
Your Responsibilities
- Proactive Mentoring: Act as a consistent point of contact for a small cohort of students, building trust and helping them manage their emotional responses to classroom triggers.
- De-escalation Leadership: Use proven techniques to diffuse high-tension situations, helping students "cool down" and reflect on their choices without losing their dignity.
- Inclusion Scaffolding: Work within the classroom to provide the emotional support necessary for students to remain focused on their learning alongside their peers.
- Goal Setting: Help students set and achieve daily behavioural and academic targets, celebrating progress and addressing setbacks with a "growth mindset" approach.
- Small Group Intervention: Lead "break-out" sessions focused on social skills, anger management, or emotional literacy to help students develop better coping mechanisms.
- Collaborative Reporting: Liaise closely with the SENCO, Pastoral Lead, and parents to provide a unified support system for the student.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Resilient Personality: A thick skin, a calm voice, and the ability to remain professional even when faced with challenging or defiant behaviour.
- Empathy & Understanding: A deep belief that "behaviour is communication" and a commitment to finding the root causes of a student's struggles.
- Relevant Experience: Backgrounds in Youth Work, Sports Coaching, Military/Police service, Psychology, or PRU (Pupil Referral Unit) settings are highly desirable.
- Conflict Resolution Skills: Training in Team-Teach or similar de-escalation frameworks is a significant advantage, though not essential for the right candidate.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one via Randstad).
