Are you a relatable, grounded, and resilient individual who can connect with young people on their own level?
Can you look past a student's defenses, find the root of their disengagement, and coach them toward a brighter academic and personal future?
Whether you have a background in youth work, sports coaching, psychology, or alternative education, are you ready to be the mentor a student never forgets?
We are seeking a dynamic and proactive Learning Support Mentor for a full-time, long-term position. This role bridges the gap between traditional classroom support and pastoral care. You won't just be helping with worksheets; you will be working with students-often those facing socio-economic barriers, tracking anomalies, or social-emotional challenges-to help them overcome the mental and behavioural hurdles that keep them from succeeding in school.
Your Responsibilities
- Targeted Mentorship: Hold a dedicated caseload of students, meeting them 1:1 or in small groups to set tangible academic, behavioral, and personal growth goals.
- Overcoming Barriers: Identify the root causes of a student's lack of engagement (e.g., low self-esteem, anxiety, or home-life challenges) and co-create practical strategies to overcome them.
- Classroom Re-integration: Accompany your mentees into lessons, acting as a calming, stabilising presence that helps them focus, manage frustration, and participate positively.
- Restorative Coaching: Lead reflective, restorative conversations with students following behavioural incidents, helping them learn from mistakes and repair relationships with staff and peers.
- Attendance & Engagement Drives: Work closely with vulnerable students to track and improve their attendance, punctuality, and overall attitude toward their education.
- Pastoral Collaboration: Act as a vital link between the student and their support network, providing regular updates to the Pastoral Leads, SENCO, and parents.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Relatability & Authenticity: The unique ability to build quick rapport with teenagers, commanding respect through empathy, active listening, and a calm, non-judgmental approach.
- Emotional Resilience: A thick skin and a steady emotional compass, allowing you to remain a dependable anchor even when handling defiance or emotional outbursts.
- Transferable Skills: Experience in Youth Work, Community Outreach, Sports Coaching, Alternative Provisions (PRUs), or Psychology is highly advantageous.
- The "Growth Mindset": A deep conviction that no student is a "lost cause" and that the right guidance can alter a young person's educational trajectory.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one via Randstad).
