Bury St Edmunds
Are you a compassionate, resilient, and highly compassionate individual who wants to make a real difference in the lives of children with complex needs?
Can you celebrate the small victories and provide the steady, consistent support that vulnerable learners rely on?
Whether you are an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant or someone from a care, coaching, or psychology background looking to transition into a classroom, we want to hear from you.
We are seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant for a full-time, long-term position at a highly regarded SEN School in Bury St Edmunds. This school provides an inclusive, nurturing environment for pupils with a wide range of learning difficulties and disabilities, including Autism (ASD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and speech and language impairments. You will be part of a close-knit, multidisciplinary team that focuses on removing barriers to education and helping every child reach their personal milestones.
Your Responsibilities
- Tailored Learning Support: Work closely with students on a 1:1 or small-group basis to deliver adapted learning activities that align with their individual Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).
- Communication Support: Implement specialist communication tools-such as Makaton, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), and visual schedules-to support non-verbal and semi-verbal pupils.
- Positive Behaviour Support: Use proactive de-escalation techniques and sensory integration strategies to support students experiencing emotional dysregulation or sensory overload.
- Independence Coaching: Help students develop vital life skills, emotional literacy, and positive peer interaction habits to build their long-term confidence and independence.
- Sensory & Care Assistance: Support pupils during sensory breaks, outdoor play, lunchtimes, and assist with personal care or mobility needs where required, ensuring dignity at all times.
- Collaborative Reporting: Monitor daily student engagement and breakthroughs, providing clear updates to the Class Teacher, SENCO, and visiting therapists.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- The Right Mindset: Outstanding patience, a warm demeanor, and a genuine passion for working within special educational needs.
- Emotional Resilience: The ability to remain calm, grounded, and professional during moments of challenging behavior or student distress.
- Transferable Skills: Prior experience in adult or child care, youth work, mental health support, sports coaching, or an SEN setting is highly advantageous.
- Commitment to Routine: Because our pupils thrive on predictability and stable relationships, we require someone who can commit to a consistent, full-time Monday-to-Friday schedule.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child & Adult DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one via Randstad).
