Ely
Are you a dedicated and resilient individual looking to make a profound impact on the lives of young people with complex needs?
Do you believe that every breakthrough, no matter how small, is a victory worth celebrating?
Whether you are an experienced SEN specialist or someone with a background in care, support work, or psychology looking to transition into a classroom setting, we want to hear from you.
We are seeking a compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant for a full-time, long-term position at a dedicated SEN School based in Ely. You will be joining a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary team that provides a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment for pupils who face significant barriers to learning.
Your Responsibilities
- Holistic Student Support: Work 1:1 and in small groups to implement tailored learning activities aligned with each student's Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP).
- Communication Support: Utilise specialist communication strategies-such as Makaton, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), and visual timetables-to empower non-verbal and semi-verbal students.
- Positive Behavioural Management: Apply gentle de-escalation techniques and positive reinforcement to support students experiencing emotional dysregulation, helping them return to a state of calm.
- Sensory & Physical Integration: Assist with sensory breaks, physical therapy exercises, and personal care/mobility needs where required, ensuring the dignity and comfort of every child.
- Social & Independence Coaching: Help students develop vital life skills, emotional literacy, and peer interaction strategies to foster their long-term independence.
- Collaborative Reporting: Track daily progress and communicate closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and visiting therapists to ensure a unified approach to care.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- The Right Mindset: Immense patience, deep empathy, and a non-judgmental approach are absolute necessities for this environment.
- Resilience: The capacity to remain grounded, calm, and professional during moments of high anxiety or challenging behaviour from students.
- Transferable Experience: A background in adult or child care, mental health support, youth work, or sports coaching is highly valued, even if your direct school-based experience is limited.
- Commitment to Continuity: Our pupils thrive on routine and predictable relationships; we require an individual who can commit to a consistent, full-time Monday-to-Friday schedule.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child & Adult DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one via Randstad).
