We are recruiting a dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant for a long-term contract starting in September 2026 at a welcoming primary school in Luton. Working 1:1 and in small groups with pupils with diverse needs-such as Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, speech and language delays, and moderate learning difficulties-this role is ideal for an empathetic support worker eager to make a lasting difference.
Core Responsibilities
- 1:1 & Targeted Support: Provide tailored one-to-one learning and emotional support to assigned pupils, adapting tasks to match their specific Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
- Sensory & De-escalation Support: Implement positive behaviour strategies and calm movement breaks to help pupils manage sensory overload and maintain focus.
- Communication Facilitation: Assist non-verbal or language-delayed pupils using visual timetables, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), and simplified instructions.
- Classroom Collaboration: Work closely alongside the class teacher and SENCO to monitor pupil responses, adjust daily learning tools, and foster an inclusive room environment.
- Progress & Observation: Keep accurate records of pupil engagement and milestones to share during weekly progress reviews with senior leadership and parents.
- Safeguarding & Welfare: Ensure the physical and emotional safety of children across structured lessons, therapies, and unstructured break times.
Candidate Requirements
- Relevant Experience: Previous background supporting children or young adults with SEN in a school, nursery, or specialist care setting (a Level 2/3 TA qualification or SEN-specific training is desirable).
- Key Attributes: High levels of patience, emotional resilience, adaptability, and a non-judgmental approach to learning challenges.
- Targeted Skills: Familiarity with EHCP goals, positive behaviour management, or alternative communication tools (e.g., Makaton, PECS).
- Vetting Checks: Holds an Enhanced Child DBS registered on the Update Service (or readiness to apply for a new one via Randstad).
