Southend
Are you a compassionate and resilient individual ready to support students with complex needs in one of Southend's leading specialist settings?
Do you have the heart to celebrate small victories and the patience to navigate challenging days?
Are you looking for a rewarding career move where you can make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable learners?
We are seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant for a full-time, long-term position at a "wonderful" SEN school in Southend-on-Sea. This school supports students with a range of needs, including Autism (ASD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD). Whether you are an experienced SEN professional or someone with a background in care, psychology, or youth work looking to transition into the classroom, this role offers the chance to become a vital part of a highly supportive multidisciplinary team.
Your Responsibilities
- Personalised Learning Support: Work 1:1 and in small groups to deliver sensory-based and academic activities tailored to each student's Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP).
- Communication Advocacy: Utilise specialist tools such as Makaton, PECS, and visual timetables to help non-verbal and semi-verbal students express their needs and feelings.
- Positive Behaviour Support: Implement calm, de-escalation strategies and follow individual behaviour plans to ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment.
- Holistic Care: Assist with personal care, mobility, and feeding where required, ensuring students' dignity and physical wellbeing are prioritised.
- Social & Emotional Mentoring: Foster a sense of belonging and confidence in students, helping them develop the social skills needed for life beyond the classroom.
- Team Collaboration: Work alongside class teachers, therapists, and parents to provide consistent support and track student progress.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- The Right Mindset: You must be patient, empathetic, and possess a genuine passion for supporting individuals with Special Educational Needs.
- Resilience: The ability to remain calm under pressure and provide a steady, supportive presence for students who may exhibit challenging behaviours.
- Transferable Skills: Backgrounds in care, nursing, sports coaching, or psychology are highly valued, even if you haven't worked in a school setting before.
- Reliability: Our students thrive on routine and consistency; we need individuals who can commit to a full-time, long-term schedule.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child & Adult DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one via Randstad).
