St Albans
Are you a compassionate, resilient, and highly compassionate individual looking for a rewarding role where you can make a tangible difference?
Can you provide a stable, encouraging presence for young people with complex needs, celebrating the small victories and providing the steady, consistent support they rely on?
If you are looking for a full-time, long-term role starting this upcoming academic year and a world-class multidisciplinary team, we want to hear from you.
We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to join our partner SEN School based in St Albans for a permanent or long-term placement starting in September 2026. This dedicated school supports pupils with a diverse range of complex needs, including Autism (ASD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges. We are looking for an educational mentor who sees past diagnoses, implements highly personalised learning pathways, and fosters an environment where every student can achieve their full potential.
Your Responsibilities
- Tailored Learning Support: Work closely with students on a 1:1 or small-group basis to deliver adapted learning activities that align strictly with their individual Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).
- Communication & Sensory Integration: Seamlessly incorporate functional communication aids (such as Makaton, PECS, or high-tech AAC devices) and sensory strategies into your daily support routine.
- Positive Behaviour Support: Cultivate a safe, predictable, and nurturing environment, utilising proactive de-escalation techniques and sensory breaks to support students experiencing emotional dysregulation.
- Independence Coaching: Help students develop vital life skills, emotional literacy, and positive peer interaction habits to build their long-term confidence and independence.
- Sensory & Care Assistance: Support pupils during sensory breaks, outdoor play, lunchtimes, and assist with personal care or mobility needs where required, ensuring dignity at all times.
- Multidisciplinary Liaison: Monitor daily student engagement and breakthroughs, providing clear updates and collaborating regularly with the Class Teacher, SENCO, and visiting therapists.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- The Right Mindset: Outstanding patience, a warm demeanour, and a genuine passion for working within special educational needs.
- Transferable Experience: Prior experience in adult or child care, youth work, mental health support, sports coaching, or an SEN setting is highly advantageous.
- Emotional Resilience: A calm, grounded, and patient demeanour, with the ability to support students confidently during periods of pupil dysregulation or high anxiety.
- Collaborative Spirit: A genuine desire to work as part of a highly unified, multidisciplinary team that puts the holistic wellbeing of the child first.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child & Adult DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one via Randstad).
