Birmingham City Council is deeply committed to safeguarding children from the earliest possible stage. Our Pre-Birth Teams play a critical role in assessing risk and providing proactive support to pregnant women and their partners, ensuring unborn children are protected and receive the safest start in life.
The Role
As a Senior Social Worker in the South Pre-Birth Team, you will manage a complex and sensitive caseload involving unborn babies and their families. You will be at the forefront of early safeguarding, undertaking in-depth assessments and making crucial recommendations to ensure the safety and well-being of the child from birth. Your responsibilities will include:
Undertaking comprehensive and complex pre-birth assessments, including Child in Need (CIN) assessments and Section 47 Child Protection Enquiries, for unborn children.
Assessing parental capacity and risk factors such as domestic abuse, substance misuse, parental mental health issues, learning disabilities, and previous child removal.
Working collaboratively with pregnant women, their partners, and wider family networks to develop robust safety plans and provide necessary support.
Liaising extensively with multi-agency partners, including midwifery teams, health visitors, legal services, adult social care, housing, and specialist services.
Preparing high-quality, analytical, and evidence-based reports for Child Protection Conferences, Public Law Outline (PLO) meetings, and court proceedings.
Making critical recommendations regarding birth planning, post-birth safeguarding plans, and potential applications for interim care orders at birth where necessary.
Providing guidance, support, and mentoring to less experienced social workers within the team regarding complex pre-birth assessments and legal processes.
Maintaining accurate, concise, and timely electronic case records in line with statutory requirements and Birmingham City Council policies.
Working effectively within strict statutory timescales in a highly sensitive and often fast-paced environment.
About You
We are looking for a resilient, highly motivated, and experienced Social Worker with:
A recognised Social Work qualification.
Current registration with Social Work England.
Significant post-qualifying experience in children's social care, with substantial experience in pre-birth, assessment, or child protection teams.
A strong understanding of relevant legislation, including the Children Act 1989, Working Together to Safeguard Children, and knowledge of legal thresholds for intervention with unborn children.
Exceptional assessment, risk analysis, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and work with sensitivity in challenging circumstances.
Demonstrable experience in report writing for statutory conferences and court.
Experience in mentoring or supporting less experienced colleagues.
A profound commitment to early safeguarding and promoting positive outcomes for vulnerable families.
A full UK driving licence and access to a car for business use (or ability to travel efficiently across South Birmingham).
