The Opportunity: Rural & Island Care in Shetland
Randstad Care is currently seeking three dedicated, resilient, and structured Support Workers to deliver a specialised 1:1 support package for a 19-year-old female resident in Shetland.
This is an exceptional opportunity for experienced care professionals seeking a rural or island placement. You will join a dedicated three-person team providing structured, predictable, and calm support to help the individual thrive in her home and local community.
In addition to competitive pay, this placement includes an outstanding travel and accommodation package funded by the council, making it ideal for support staff open to working away from home over the festive period.
Key Responsibilities
- Routine & Structure: Delivering clear, step-by-step prompting for daily personal care, meal preparation, and structured household routines.
- Medication Administration: Safely administering prescribed daily medication, including Creon enzymes alongside all meals and snacks.
- Communication & Boundary Management: Maintaining firm, consistent professional boundaries. Operating within a strict real-time, "need-to-know" communication framework to minimise anticipatory anxiety.
- 1:1 Outdoor Supervision: Ensuring vigilant outdoor safety and road awareness, accounting for the individual's visual impairment (CVI) and depth-perception challenges.
- De-escalation & Wellbeing: Facilitating low-stimulation, engaging activities (crafts, music, animal care) whilst monitoring for signs of emotional dysregulation, sensory overload, or skin-picking.
- Collaborative Support: Working alongside day-support services (attending Monday to Friday, approx. 09:00 to 16:00) and integrating with the wider Supported Living service when required.
Shift Patterns & Rota
The package operates continuous 1:1 support, 7 days per week, shared across a core team of three workers:
- Early Shift: 07:00 - 14:15
- Late Shift: 14:00 - 21:15
- Sleep-in Shift: Overnight support
- Additional Hours: Extra shifts across the wider service are readily available for staff seeking increased earning potential.
Comprehensive Travel & Accommodation Package
- Free Return Travel: Full ferry travel to and from Shetland at the start and completion of the contract covered by the council.
- Free Accommodation: Shared accommodation in a dedicated, fully furnished 3-bedroom house with fellow agency colleagues.
- Utility Bills Covered: Council-funded utilities and bills (candidates need only provide their own personal food and groceries).
- Mileage Allowance: 45p per mile reimbursed for all work-related transport and community engagement.
Candidate Requirements
- Experience: Proven track record supporting individuals with learning disabilities, ADHD, heightened anxiety, or complex sensory/visual impairments.
- Driving Licence & Vehicle: Must hold a full UK driving licence and have access to your own personal vehicle with appropriate business insurance cover (points considered subject to risk assessment).
- Availability: Must be fully available to commit to the rota across the upcoming festive period, including Christmas and New Year.
- Compliance: Enhanced PVG/DBS check, right to work in the UK, and relevant mandatory training (or willingness to complete Randstad refresher modules).
