SEN Experience
Role Overview
We are seeking an empathetic, flexible, and SEN-experienced GCSE Maths Tutor to deliver 1:1 home tuition for a highly academic 16-year-old student (Year 12 age). The student missed significant education in Year 11 due to medical conditions and requires personalized preparation to sit her GCSE Maths exam in November 2026.
Because the learner experiences severe chronic fatigue, high anxiety, and neurodivergent needs, this role requires a gentle, low-demand approach focused on building trust, academic confidence, and stamina over time.
Key Responsibilities
- Tailored Academic Delivery: Provide high-quality 1:1 GCSE Maths tuition in brief, manageable bursts (20 to 60 minutes) tailored to the student's daily cognitive capacity.
- Contextual & Engaging Learning: Adapt teaching materials to align with the student's personal interests (e.g., animal care and veterinary topics) to maximize engagement.
- Flexible & Low-Demand Approach: Work around fluctuating energy levels, low mood, and health needs, adjusting session lengths dynamically without placing pressure on the student.
- Pacing & Progression: Help rebuild confidence and stamina gradually, supporting the long-term goal of transitioning the student toward post-16 vocational pathways (e.g., Animal Management).
Person Specification & Qualifications
Essential Criteria:
- Subject Expertise: Strong knowledge of the GCSE Maths curriculum and exam preparation strategies.
- SEN Experience: Demonstrated experience working with learners on the Autism Spectrum (ASD), including knowledge of sensory sensitivities, demand avoidant/low-demand strategies, and social anxiety.
- Understanding of Physical Health Conditions: Understanding of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME) and the need for frequent rest breaks, pacing, and flexible scheduling.
- Relational Approach: Exceptional pastoral skills, high empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental approach to rebuild trust after prior negative tutoring experiences.
Desirable Qualifications & Training:
- Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (or equivalent Autism & Learning Disability training).
- Mental Health First Aid certification.
- Numeracy Champion status or functional skills teaching background.
- Familiarity with online/bite-sized learning tools (e.g., Century Tech "nuggets") for low-anxiety, low-demand tracking.
Working Environment & Safeguarding
- Location: Delivered in the student's home environment.
- Safeguarding: An enhanced DBS check on the Update Service is required.
