Empower Students to Thrive in Higher Education
Are you passionate about supporting neurodivergent learners to achieve their full academic and personal potential?
Randstad Student Support is recruiting dedicated Specialist Mentors to work one-to-one with undergraduate and postgraduate students at Lancaster University.
Funded through the Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA), Specialist Mentors provide personalised, non-clinical guidance. Working collaboratively with autistic students, you will help demystify the university experience, support executive functioning, establish effective routines, and foster lasting independence and confidence.
What Will You Be Doing?
As a Specialist Mentor ASC, you will offer specialised, student-centred support tailored to each individual's unique strengths and needs:
-Executive Functioning & Planning: Supporting students with time management, breaking down assignment briefs, managing competing deadlines, and establishing structured weekly routines.
-Navigating Campus & University Life: Helping students manage academic transitions, adapt to new learning environments, and navigate communication with tutors and university departments.
-Managing Overwhelm & Anxiety: Developing individual coping strategies to address study-related stress, sensory sensitivities, social communication barriers, or change.
-Promoting Independence: Working alongside each student to develop realistic action plans that foster autonomy and self-advocacy.
-Accurate Record-Keeping: Maintaining clear session notes and submitting timesheets promptly via our user-friendly online portal.
-Safe Practice: Maintaining professional boundaries and liaising with Randstad's coordination team regarding any safeguarding or student wellbeing concerns.
Eligibility & Requirements
Because this is a DSA-funded Non-Medical Helper (NMH) specialist role, candidates must meet specific criteria under the DfE Quality Assurance Framework:
1. Professional Qualification / Professional Body Membership
You must hold a relevant qualifying degree/credential and membership with an eligible professional body (or recognized pathway) under the DSA NMH framework (e.g., qualifying degrees or registrations across social work, nursing, occupational therapy, counselling/psychotherapy, or specialised neurodiversity practitioner accreditations).
2. National Autistic Society (NAS) Training Modules
-Candidates are required to have completed the relevant National Autistic Society (NAS) core training modules (or equivalent accredited ASC training approved under DSA guidelines).
-Haven't completed these yet? We are happy to support you. We provide direct access to the required training materials prior to starting. Once completed, your NAS certification provides an officially recognized credential that enhances your CV and professional profile for working with autistic and neurodivergent individuals.
3. Key Attributes & Experience
-Demonstrable experience supporting autistic individuals or students with neurodiverse conditions (ASC, ADHD, SpLDs).
-Excellent interpersonal, empathetic, and clear communication skills.
-Ability to deliver sessions on-site at Lancaster University's Bailrigg campus, with flexibility to offer remote sessions where appropriate.
-High levels of reliability, punctuality, and professional integrity.
