About the Role
Are you passionate about making a transformative difference in the lives of care-experienced and vulnerable children?
We are seeking dedicated, empathetic, and trauma-informed Educational Well-Being Mentors to deliver targeted, early-intervention support.
Looked-after children (CIC), previously looked-after children (PLAC), and children with a social worker (CWSW) face distinct educational challenges. As an Educational Well-Being Mentor, you will provide critical one-to-one and small group interventions targeting two crucial milestone areas:
- National Public Examination Preparation: Guiding pupils through SATs, GCSEs, A-Levels, and vocational qualifications while addressing exam anxiety.
- School-to-School Transitions: Supporting smooth progression across key educational phases (Early Years into Primary, Year 6 to 7, secondary into Post-16, and transitions into higher education, training, or employment).
Key Responsibilities
- 1:1 Direct Mentoring: Deliver structured, community-based 1:1 sessions focused on effective revision techniques, time management, emotional resilience, and overcoming exam stress.
- Transition & Wellbeing Workshops: Design and facilitate engaging small group workshops during holiday periods (February, Easter, June half-term, and Summer) to enhance social confidence, coping strategies, and self-worth.
- Personalised Action Planning: Co-produce tailored support plans with each child, embedding their voice and sharing progress with social workers, foster carers, and Designated Teachers.
- Outcome Measurement & Tracking: Utilise validated assessment tools (e.g., SDQ, RCADS, CYP-IAPT) to monitor wellbeing, attendance, and educational progress.
- Trauma-Informed & Inclusive Practice: Deliver strengths-based, non-stigmatising support tailored to neurodivergent pupils and those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
- Multi-Agency Collaboration: Partner seamlessly with Designated Teachers, Independent Reviewing Officers (IROs), social workers, and mental health professionals to ensure integrated support pathways.
- Safeguarding Excellence: Maintain rigorous safeguarding standards in accordance with Birmingham Safeguarding Children Partnership policies and KCSIE guidelines.
What We Are Looking For;
Essential Qualifications & Certifications:
- Relevant Qualification: Minimum Level 2 or 3 in Counselling, CBT, Mental Health, Child Development, or Trauma-Informed Practice (or equivalent).
- Safeguarding Certification: Level 1 Safeguarding Children Training (or willingness to complete prior to start).
- DBS Check: Enhanced Child and Adult DBS Check with Barred List checks (or active registration on the DBS Update Service).
Experience & Knowledge:
- Proven track record of delivering 1:1 or small group mentoring/interventions for care-experienced or vulnerable children and young people.
- In-depth understanding of the impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), developmental trauma, and attachment difficulties.
- Practical experience with strategies to reduce examination anxiety, support executive functioning, and enable emotional regulation.
- Ability to adapt communication and interventions for neurodivergent learners, pupils with SEND, or EAL students.
Skills & Attributes:
- Exceptional relational skills-able to quickly establish trust and psychological safety with children facing attachment challenges.
- Strong organisational skills to manage caseloads, maintain auditable records, and uphold UK GDPR compliance.
- Flexibility to deliver sessions in community settings, during after-school hours, and throughout school holiday periods.
What We Offer
- Purpose-Driven Impact: Play a pivotal role in boosting academic attainment and emotional well-being for Birmingham's most vulnerable pupils.
- Accredited Training & CPD: Access ongoing professional development in trauma recovery, child neuroscience, and advanced safeguarding.
- Clinical & Peer Supervision: Benefit from regular supervisory check-ins, case reviews, and reflective practice sessions.
