Role: Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager
Location: Heysham
Contract Length: 3 - 6 Months - Potential Extension
Salary: Up to £60,000 DOE
Randstad has partnered with an innovative, independent microbiology business that is currently experiencing an exciting period of growth and looking to expand its dedicated team.
The role
This is a senior-level Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) leadership role, sitting on the site's Senior Leadership Team. The core focus of the position is to oversee, drive, and take ultimate responsibility for the EHS strategy, culture, and compliance of a highly regulated manufacturing site (such as chemical, pharmaceutical, or petrochemical).
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Strategy: Serve on the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to champion site EHS culture. Develop, deploy, and maintain robust EHS and Sustainability programs, strategies, and budgets.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure full compliance with all EHS legislation, corporate initiatives, and industry standards. Manage environmental permitting (IPPC, Waste Management) and process safety/COMAH requirements.
- Risk & Incident Management: Act as the site's technical expert for complex EHS compliance, hazardous materials, and process safety. Support risk assessments (COSHH, DSEAR) and guide root cause analysis (RCA) for incident and near-miss investigations.
- Engagement & Training: Lead the Behavioural Based Safety Team and connect with the workforce through training, presentations, toolbox talks, and annual safety events.
- Reporting & Continuous Improvement: Drive EHS continuous improvement initiatives. Manage global and local metrics, analyze site data, and report progress to internal leadership and external regulators.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education & Certifications: Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field. NEBOSH National Diploma or General Certificate, plus membership in IOSH and IEMA.
- Industry Experience: Proven EHS Management and leadership experience within highly regulated sectors (Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Oil/Petro, or FMCG).
- Regulatory Expertise: Extensive experience working with regulators on Lower Tier COMAH, IPPC, and Waste Management Licensed sites. Strong understanding of HSE/EA guidance and ACOPs.
- Systems Knowledge: Solid experience leading and managing an ISO14001 Environmental Management System (EMS).
- Core Skills: Expertise in behavioural safety and human factors, alongside strong project management, time management, and presentation skills. Must possess the interpersonal skills to influence and train teams effectively.
