Start Date: ASAP
The Opportunity
We are seeking a passionate, resilient, and deeply empathetic Learning Mentor in the Plymouth area to support incredible young people who need a tailored approach to education. We know that before a student can engage with learning, they need to feel safe, understood, and emotionally secure.
This is a highly rewarding role within a dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) environment, perfect for someone who wants to make a tangible, life-changing impact every single day.
Key Responsibilities
Build Coping Strategies: Work 1:1 with students who experience high anxiety, sensory overload, or school refusal, helping them co-create personalised coping mechanisms.
Champion Wellbeing: Act as a trusted adult, supporting the overall mental health and emotional wellbeing of students to help them gradually re-engage with their education.
Partner with Families: Build strong relationships and work closely with parents and carers to ensure a consistent, supportive approach between school and home.
Community Engagement: Take learning beyond the classroom. You will support students out in the Plymouth community to develop vital life skills, boost social confidence, and navigate real-world scenarios.
About You
You don't necessarily need a background in formal teaching, but you do need boundless patience, excellent active listening skills, and a genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people.
Ideally, you will have:
Experience working with children or young people with SEN (such as Autism, ADHD, SEMH, or trauma histories).
An adaptable, creative mindset-ready to pivot a session if a student is having a difficult day.
Strong communication skills to build trust with anxious students and protective families alike.
A proactive attitude toward community-based learning and safety.
Why Apply?
Flexibility: Options for day-to-day assignments or stable, long-term placements depending on your lifestyle and career goals.
Immediate Impact: A prompt start date means you can step in and start making a difference right away.
Supportive Partnership: Work alongside dedicated consultants who will support you throughout your placement.
