Thetford
Are you a compassionate, resilient, and highly compassionate individual looking for a rewarding role where you can make a tangible difference?
Can you provide a stable, encouraging presence for young people who face significant barriers to learning?
Whether you have direct classroom experience or a background in care, mental health support, or coaching, Randstad Education wants to hear from you.
We are seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant for a full-time, long-term position at a well regarded SEN School based in Thetford. This vibrant setting caters to pupils with a diverse range of special educational needs, including Autism (ASD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and complex communication needs. You will join an exceptionally supportive, multidisciplinary team focused on creating a nurturing environment where every small victory is recognised and celebrated.
Your Responsibilities
- Holistic 1:1 & Group Support: Guide pupils through tailored educational activities, breaking down instructions to match their individual learning paces and goals outlined in their EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans).
- Communication Support: Utilise specialised communication tools-such as Makaton, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), and visual timetables-to give a voice to non-verbal and semi-verbal learners.
- Positive Behaviour Support: Implement proactive de-escalation strategies and sensory breaks to support students navigating emotional dysregulation or sensory overload, helping them return to a state of calm.
- Independence Coaching: Assist students during practical life-skills sessions, helping them build the emotional literacy, social confidence, and independence needed for life beyond the classroom.
- Sensory & Physical Integration: Support pupils during outdoor learning, sensory play, and lunchtimes, assisting with mobility or personal care needs where required with the utmost dignity.
- Progress Tracking: Maintain detailed daily records of student engagement and breakthroughs, collaborating closely with the Class Teacher, SENCO, and speech and language therapists.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- The Right Mindset: Immense patience, an empathetic nature, and a passion for advocating for children with special educational needs.
- Emotional Resilience: The capacity to remain perfectly calm, grounded, and professional under pressure or during challenging behavioural situations.
- Transferable Experience: Backgrounds in adult or child care, youth work, mental health, support work, psychology, or sports coaching are highly valued.
- Commitment to Consistency: Because our pupils rely heavily on routine and predictable relationships, you must be able to commit to a consistent, full-time Monday-to-Friday schedule.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child & Adult DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one via Randstad).
