Job Title: Specialist 1-2-1 Home Tutor (SEN / SEMH)
Location: Peterborough (In-person, home-based)
Start Date: September 2026
Hours: Starting at 5 hours per week (1 hour/day), gradually scaling up to 15 hours per week
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced, highly adaptable, and qualified educator to deliver bespoke, 1-2-1 in-person tuition for a Year 8 student in Peterborough.
This student has complex special educational needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges, including ADHD, ADD, and severe OCD. Due to OCD-related anxieties, the student cannot physically touch learning materials (such as pens, pencils, or laptops).
You will be responsible for delivering a tailored KS3 curriculum (Science, Maths, and English) completely through verbal dialogue, visual aids, and interactive discussion, removing the need for traditional written work.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver Verbal-First Learning: Adapt all lessons to be entirely verbal and visual. Use high-level questioning, oral modeling, and discussion to assess and capture learning without requiring the student to write or type.
- Core Subject Delivery: Teach KS3 Science, English, and Maths, tailoring content to re-engage the student and build their academic confidence.
- Facilitate EdTech (as a Scribe): Use Century Tech on your own device to baseline and track progress. You will display the platform's bite-sized "nuggets" (10-15 minute lessons) and input the student's verbal answers for them.
- Build Stamina & Routine: Establish clear, consistent daily routines to help the student gradually increase their learning stamina from 1 hour a day up to 15 hours per week.
- Collaborate & Communicate: Work closely with the local authority's Behaviour and Inclusion team and the student's parents to ensure a cohesive, supportive learning environment.
- Uphold Strict Safeguarding: Deliver all sessions in communal areas of the home with doors open, maintaining professional boundaries and reporting any disclosures immediately.
What We Are Looking For
- Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is highly desirable.
- Subject Expertise: Confident delivering KS3 Science (up to GCSE level is a plus), as well as KS3 Maths and English.
- SEN/SEMH Experience: Proven experience working with ADHD, ADD, visual impairments, and EBD (Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties). Experience supporting students with severe anxiety or OCD is highly advantageous.
- Exceptional Adaptability: The ability to think on your feet, ditch the worksheets, and teach effectively through conversation and real-world connection.
- Patience & Resilience: A proven track record of slowly building trust and academic stamina with highly anxious or disengaged young people.
Safeguarding & Requirements
- Must hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
- Must have a thorough, up-to-date understanding of safeguarding procedures in a home-learning environment.
